USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

F U(United States)says...

This is so dumb. Respect the English language and culture please. Nobody speaks like this. And nobody even cares.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Ask yourself this question...who took whose name first? Who disrespected about 35 or more countries by taking the name of the continent in which they are all located in?

F U Bsays...

You're a ***** idiot. Nobody is listening to your nonsense and the real English speakers and Americans are laughing at you. Go ***** yourself and have fun being a crazy idiot.

Davesays...

Are you clear now about America?

If they founded America, they could take its name as well.

The United States Of America!

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

By the way, when speaking about the Mayans and/or Aztecs, people usually call that piece of land, MesoAmerica, meaning, the middle of America. And this is not in the middle of the United States just for the record!

Davesays...

that's bulls*** from you.

People usually what?, They were The Mayans and a tones of other civilizations that were not just at the middle of the continent.

All these Indies were forced to learn their so called American ideas (that's why the language English is internationalized), if you did not speak English then you were Hispanic, or, etc.

That's maybe too American for you to understand.

NotanAmericansays...

and the people that started saying mesoamerica were not the Mayans, it was them, the American people that came to the now called continent "America".

Meso-America, that's a very American word created by the upcoming Americans.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

do you have a beef with the British?

Davesays...

No, I have a beef with the stupid creators of this website and the rest of the stupid people (like you) that need to be cleared out about America.

Respect their name as a country.

The United States Of America

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

I’m replying to the Stupid Dave …

This website is actually A BEAUTIFUL AND FACTUAL WEBSITE for the stupid and ignorant English-Speaking People to think about!

FakeMrsAnnonymoussays...

Are you talking about slavery or colonizations?

You are stupid.

They brought their so called American ideas to the other hemisphere they were not awared of.

Who were the people making maps back then, the Mayans?, they were not European or Asians and they had their own system.

What?, was theirs too complicated for the upcoming American people?

You are stupid.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Hey, that was just to answer your own post:

Dave wrote:

" Do you know what is something that is very American? Slavery is very American.

it? or was it just a culture back then?

Those people came to the so called American Continent and implemented their system, it was not a surprise, they had been doing it for years before they got here."

The great Mayan civilization had been dispersed for centuries before the Europeans came to the new world. However, some small tribes were still living in areas of Yucatan, in Mexico and Guatemala and Honduras. These were probably what you are referring to. Or perhaps, you meant the Aztecs from Mexico. These were alive when Cortez, a spaniard conquistador, came to Mexico during the conquistas.

Davesays...

what you are telling me I don't need to know it but it is great that you point it out.

All I know is that the American people are those who came to the Mayan's hemisphere to name the new world "America"?, they also named The United States, they are the same people, what's their difference?.

Slavery was an act of colonization too and that's how we all got mixed up as races. Also, slavery was business and the smarter people took advantage of it.

Do you think that Mexican people should really take the name American?

The name of the continent was modified because the upcoming Americans(from Europe) already knew what they were doing, they were already doing it in Europe and Asia.

I wished the continent was named Azteca but it was not a good thing for them.

That's why they are The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Azteca would had been a good name too. Have you heard that people thought the name "America" came from the Middle of the landmass, in America? Some people have said that it could had come from the Mountains in the Central American country of Nicaragua. On Columbus' fourth voyage, he was forced to come inland due to a storm he faced around Honduras ending up in Nicaragua. They met the Amerrisque indians, whose name was taken from the Amerrisque mountains. The indigenous there had gold and so it happens that maybe Vespucci came to this area too and fell in love with the place so much so that he changed his name from Alberigo (Albert) to Amerigo (Amerrisque).

Davesays...

Maybe English is too American for you Stupid David.

The United States Of America!

Davesays...

So, you still want to keep talking about America.

Do you know what is something that is very American? Slavery is very American.

was it? or was it just a culture back then?

Those people came to the so called American Continent and implemented their system, it was not a surprise, they had been doing it for years before they got here.

The United States Of America

East Russian(Russia)says...

Oh, that is why in East Russia the people are Asians. That has too be something very American too.

Davesays...

Correction:

They were doing it for years before they got there.

At the end of all, America is already American by now, everywhere in America.

And now you complain that they founded The United States Of America as well?

It is their America and they are still America.

The United States Of America!

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Dave, that explains why you are rambling. Before America, this great landmass and new world was conquered, slavery was rampant in the known world ..Europe, Asia, Africa etc. Slavery does not characterize the United States of America, nor the continent of America. The entire world was trading and using people as slaves. Slaves were from different races like blacks, Arabs, Asians and whites. In the very beginning, Columbus used the indigenous people of America as slaves too. The slavery idea came from Europe/Asia/Africa not from America. The United States is characterized as a nation of freedom and opportunity not slavery.

Davidsays...

“So it’s pretty obvious that United States didn’t make up the word in question.”

Nobody here is claiming anything different. I certainly am not. Thanks, Mrs. Obvious.

And, as you know, it was just South America that was named ‘America’ in 1507. The name ‘America’ wasn’t extended to North America until 1538 with the Mercator map. You have already forgotten how I educated you about this? Get your facts straight.

Davesays...

Remember that you are a stupid copy paster.

The people that named the continent America as such are the same people that named The United States Of America.

That topic is too American for you but maybe not to the Mexican people who were there already before everything was even named America. But, you are stupid.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

hahaha, you didn't educate me, i knew it before you even mentioned it! lol

Davidsays...

Then why do you keep misstating the facts?

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Why do you say I am mistating the facts? Which facts?

Davesays...

Do you still want to keep talking about America?

The United States Of America

Davesays...

If they named the continent, what's wrong with them naming their country?.

It was already Americanized in their hemisphere and they brought their American ideas.

Are you American?, what were these people before the continent was Americanized?

Maybe you might understand America better now.

Davesays...

and then that's why there is Mexico. Are they really American?, they were there already and were forced to get a name as a country because it was the American way to do things back then.

Got it?

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

I found this comment while looking for the map of 1507 at the library of congress and wanted to share it here: Alex

For all of you who still wonder why United States of America has the word “America” in it:

“America” has been used to name the entire “discovered” land of mass (this belongs to a different topic) for centuries way before United States included in its name. Just to give an idea: the new land was named America in 1507 and U.S.A was officially name as we know it to date in 1776 – that’s a 269 years difference!

So it’s pretty obvious that United States didn’t make up the word in question.

In 1776, United States became the first independent country in … America."

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

So, the United States used the name of the continent to be connected to the continent. Only that people thought that it was its proper name and now it has spread everywhere that this is what they think it is. Then for some reason, the U.S. started to teach a two continent version and whalaaa! the name America was free to take. But not so fast, because to millions of people in the continent, America is one continent not two. So, if we go back to the possibility that the founders who named the U.S.A. where using the name America to mean that the U.S. where in the one continent in the new world, America, then that makes more sense.

Davesays...

Everybody knows that.

Why does it hurt that they compounded the country name with the word America in it?.

Do you forget that that's the American way?

They named the continent and they also named The United States Of America.

What's up?

Those people went all over the world to put names to the new world. The world we live in now.

Just take it how it is.

Do you still want to keep talking about America?.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

There was no American before the new world was accepted as a continent. Are you against European conquest or something? This site is dedicated to the issue of the name "America" so why not talk about it in here? America is a continent and the U.S. took the name of the continent to let the British Crown know that they were no longer under European rule so they put the name of the continent the nation was being born in/from.
