USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

The name “America” is far too inclusive to be used by the president who said in 2017 "I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris,".

I don’t think he wants to represent any cities in Mexico or Canada either.

Fabián(Argentina)says...

Simply US American! So easy, the country is called United States of America*, not only America, then "US American".

*and the part "United States of..." is not like "Republic of" in countries like Republic of Argentina, USA is the total name of the country.

Davidsays...

But the country IS very often called America, and you know it, so don’t pretend otherwise. America isn’t its official name, of course, but we all know that it is one of its common names. Official names are not the only names that exist. The preferences of some people do not negate the reality of what the USA is very commonly called. The way things are sometimes done by some people in some languages does not determine how things are or should be done in English or any other language. It is simply a fact, and you know it, that America is one of the names of the USA.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

It has been a common way to relate to the United States because of misconceptions and noone has stopped it so it spread as if it was correct. If you know that it is the name of the continent, why use it for a country in the continent only? Because no one stopped it from misusing it as such? If we go with who is really truthful, then you all loose because a common nickname or short version does not imply the correct name. OF AMERICA meant that the United States are in the continent OF America and they did this in order to differentiate the new nation from being under the influence of the European/British kingdoms.

Rorysays...

The name America sounds far too inclusive for a country building a WALL across the Mexican border.

USAisAmerica(United States)says...

This site should be deleted, it's anti-American and a blight to the English Language.

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

YOU ARE WRONG “USAisAmerica”.

This site should NOT AT ALL and NEVER be deleted. It is NOT ANTI-American and a blight to the English Language.

It is only considered as a blight to the Ignorant Anglo-Americans!

LearnEnglish(UK)says...

This is flat out disrespectful to the English language. Take your pandering nonsense elsewhere.

USAisAmerica(United States)says...

Newsflash: NOBODY CARES.

Nobody is gonna change how they speak anyways. This is just a laughable effort that nobody will listen to.

F U(United States)says...

This is so dumb. Respect the English language and culture please. Nobody speaks like this. And nobody even cares.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Ask yourself this question...who took whose name first? Who disrespected about 35 or more countries by taking the name of the continent in which they are all located in?

F U Bsays...

You're a ***** idiot. Nobody is listening to your nonsense and the real English speakers and Americans are laughing at you. Go ***** yourself and have fun being a crazy idiot.

Davesays...

Are you clear now about America?

If they founded America, they could take its name as well.

The United States Of America!

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

By the way, when speaking about the Mayans and/or Aztecs, people usually call that piece of land, MesoAmerica, meaning, the middle of America. And this is not in the middle of the United States just for the record!

Davesays...

that's bulls*** from you.

People usually what?, They were The Mayans and a tones of other civilizations that were not just at the middle of the continent.

All these Indies were forced to learn their so called American ideas (that's why the language English is internationalized), if you did not speak English then you were Hispanic, or, etc.

That's maybe too American for you to understand.

NotanAmericansays...

and the people that started saying mesoamerica were not the Mayans, it was them, the American people that came to the now called continent "America".

Meso-America, that's a very American word created by the upcoming Americans.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

do you have a beef with the British?

Davesays...

No, I have a beef with the stupid creators of this website and the rest of the stupid people (like you) that need to be cleared out about America.

Respect their name as a country.

The United States Of America

The Real and True American(Canada)says...

I’m replying to the Stupid Dave …

This website is actually A BEAUTIFUL AND FACTUAL WEBSITE for the stupid and ignorant English-Speaking People to think about!

FakeMrsAnnonymoussays...

Are you talking about slavery or colonizations?

You are stupid.

They brought their so called American ideas to the other hemisphere they were not awared of.

Who were the people making maps back then, the Mayans?, they were not European or Asians and they had their own system.

What?, was theirs too complicated for the upcoming American people?

You are stupid.

The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Hey, that was just to answer your own post:

Dave wrote:

" Do you know what is something that is very American? Slavery is very American.

it? or was it just a culture back then?

Those people came to the so called American Continent and implemented their system, it was not a surprise, they had been doing it for years before they got here."

The great Mayan civilization had been dispersed for centuries before the Europeans came to the new world. However, some small tribes were still living in areas of Yucatan, in Mexico and Guatemala and Honduras. These were probably what you are referring to. Or perhaps, you meant the Aztecs from Mexico. These were alive when Cortez, a spaniard conquistador, came to Mexico during the conquistas.

Davesays...

what you are telling me I don't need to know it but it is great that you point it out.

All I know is that the American people are those who came to the Mayan's hemisphere to name the new world "America"?, they also named The United States, they are the same people, what's their difference?.

Slavery was an act of colonization too and that's how we all got mixed up as races. Also, slavery was business and the smarter people took advantage of it.

Do you think that Mexican people should really take the name American?

The name of the continent was modified because the upcoming Americans(from Europe) already knew what they were doing, they were already doing it in Europe and Asia.

I wished the continent was named Azteca but it was not a good thing for them.

That's why they are The United States Of America

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

Azteca would had been a good name too. Have you heard that people thought the name "America" came from the Middle of the landmass, in America? Some people have said that it could had come from the Mountains in the Central American country of Nicaragua. On Columbus' fourth voyage, he was forced to come inland due to a storm he faced around Honduras ending up in Nicaragua. They met the Amerrisque indians, whose name was taken from the Amerrisque mountains. The indigenous there had gold and so it happens that maybe Vespucci came to this area too and fell in love with the place so much so that he changed his name from Alberigo (Albert) to Amerigo (Amerrisque).
