America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

They still are States that are in America. (Yes America, "the country", not the continent). That's their name.
Its because people have followed a conditioning of the wrong name.
If it’s wrong, then so is your precious definition.
So important is the "United States" part of the country's name that is very present in its highest symbol, the flag. The 50 stars represent the number of states that make up the nation currently, and the bars the original thirteen that became independent.
