America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:
Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

U.S. congressman Lucas M. Miller of Wisconsin was an odd dude. He served just one term in the House, and when you look at the bills he introduced it's easy to guess why. Back in 1893, Miller proposed abolishing the Army and Navy, wiping out pension laws, and even wanted to amend the U.S. Constitution to rename the United States of America to something a bit more sci-fi: "The United States of Earth."
Why would he want to do this? Was it some proto-hippie way of saying that the U.S. was just part of a larger global community? Nope. It was because Miller believed that the U.S. empire would expand so much that it would eventually swallow up the entire world.
it was made in "America".
Who cares you thought otherwise, that's your stupid problem.
made in America!
It was made in America, not China.
It makes no sense if you write down "made in Europe".
It makes no sense if you write down "made in Asia".
Clearly, everyone has to assume that if it is made in America it has to be done by the only America we all know.
Is there another America?, I don't think so.
The United States Of America
You lose and I WIN this game show game!!!
Words can and do have multiple meanings. The meanings you don’t like are not incorrect or mistaken. Deal with reality.
Spain??
Mexico??
1507 and 1538. Accept the significance of these dates.
Using ‘America’ to refer to the Americas represents a change in meaning of a proper noun. What don’t you understand about this?
Because your precious, sacred, preferred meaning IS NOT THE ORIGINAL MEANING!!!!
You continue with the crazy explanation of yours that the map had the name "America" in what the South of America. BAH! If you read antique maps, names sometimes are not necessarily right on top of the whole thing. Anyways, Europeans gave the new world its name and the name stuck as more lands were discovered. You seem to skip that part. So, let me ask you, when the USA extended itself all the way to the West annexing the Mexican states of California, COlorado, etc, according to your way of thinking, that new part is not under the United States name? Give me a break!
Americas is a plural, just like Europes, Africas, etc.
Don't get messed up with grammar and languages.
America is the new world.
In the new world everyone is american. Others are Americans, Mexicans, Canadians, etc.
Spread into Mexico??
Yes. Mexico.
Mrs. Anonymous, please enlighten us with more of your deeply factual knowledge of how the US didn’t spread into Mexico. We can always count on you to be reliable, unbiased, and knowledgeable. Like when you argued for months that America isn’t a word. And when you argued for months that America isn’t a name for the US. And when you argued that no Spaniards call the US ‘America’. And when you argued for many months that all of the Americas were named ‘America’ in 1507, even though only South America was. You have proven again and again that you know exactly what you are talking about. Thanks so much for the facts and wisdom.
Spain??
Yes. Spain.
You are probably a democrat liberal twisting words to your own explanations inserting them with a new meaning or a different meaning. Or, perhaps I wasn't so straight with my answers. Please do not speculate on what I say, ask and ask again if what you think is what I said. 1. America is a name, a word, sure, but is a proper noun not a common noun which does not change meanings! The idea that was put was that any word can change meanings and my point was that proper nouns were not words that would change their meaning like America, for example, a proper name for a continent, would not change its meaning since it was directed to be to mean a continent not a country. This word, was not just another word, it is a proper name that can not change its meaning. Now, people will use the name "America" to name people, other things etc. but that DOES not change its original meaning that was first given to name a continent.
First of all, I am not claiming, and I never claimed, that when proper nouns acquire new meanings, that the old meanings cease to exist or become incorrect. ‘America’ means both ‘the Americas’ and ‘the USA’, among other things.
The original meaning of ‘America’ as ‘South America’ still exists, but really only in a historical sense because it is so rarely, if ever, used this way any longer. Your preferred meaning (which IS NOT the original meaning) of ‘America’ as ‘the Americas’ represents a change in meaning of a proper noun. You claim that proper nouns cannot undergo any change in meaning. If this is true, then your preferred meaning is incorrect. Luckily for your feelings, but unluckily for your “argument”, it isn’t true that proper nouns cannot acquire different meanings, so your preferred meaning is not incorrect. And, in exactly the same way, the more recent meaning of ‘the USA’ is also correct.
THINK!!!
what are you talking about?, you are stupid.
South Africa!
I am not sure if I argued with you about Spain and America, but sure, in these days, if you are meaning, in today's society, thanks to conditioning, marketing, bombarding the issue and imposing strength, the U.S. has been wining that issue in the whole world thanks to the getting rid of true history in schools. When real history was abolished in high schools, conditioning of what the government wants people to think and know has gained much and rapidly. However, the Spain of old, knew very well what America was. La America was a continent and as I asked around when I was in Spain, they still think it is.
I wish we could all be as well educated as you.
they know it is a continent, they also know it is a country too, why does it turn so complicated?
Everyone is stupid. Why make a big deal about America?.
If it was made in America, where else has it been made?
What's the difference when it reads "made in China"?
If you know that America is a country, assume that it is made in America and that's it.
Keep it cool.
Made in America!
We did argue this point and now you are admitting that you were wrong and I was right. This is a first for you. It’s a big step. Hopefully you will keep it up.
Spain people thinking that America is a continent is logical.
That they do not think America is a country it is their stupid problem, not an American issue.
America is America anywhere in the world.
They are and would still be America!, Spain would still be Spain.
American people
Spanish People
these two type of people are European people or American people.
Spanish people confused about Americans. That is because you are European hahahaha!

The United States Of America!
