America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:
Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

No one would take away America from its name.
What are you pretending?, to call Mexico "United States of Mexico?.
Sorry dude. America already belongs to someone else.
Its name, United States Of America.
America is America and no one else has that name as a country.
Sorry stupid idiot.
You are still stupid.
The United States Of America
In Mexico we got united as Mexicans.
That's why it is United Mexican States.
Not "United American States" because we are not Americans, we are Mexicans.
In China they would say that you are from America.
If you are Mexican, we could say that you are american in Australia too.
But if you are stupid, you probably feel bad about it.
more respect please, Ok?
We are talking about America.
It is my choice if I wanted to act stupid but I would not be so stupid overthere.
Mexico

“Scott took Veracruz in March after a siege of three weeks and began the march to Mexico City. Despite some Mexican resistance, Scott’s campaign was marked by an unbroken series of victories, and he entered Mexico City on September 14, 1847. The fall of the Mexican capital ended the military phase of the conflict.”
“...Mexico ceded to the United States nearly all the territory now included in the states of New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas, and western Colorado...”

Spread into Mexico??
Yes. Mexico.
The whole thing was because of Texas! Glad you included more information. Okay, they did get to Mexico City, but the U.S. did not expanded and took all of Mexico, as some people wanted to do, (look for "All of Mexico Movement"). So, the U.S. retrieved that idea and Mexico had to give up the lands you mentioned, and the U.S paid like $15 million or so for them. Guadalupe Hidalgo somehow ended that expansion and the war. But,thank you for bringing the info that supports what I said about the U.S. idea of expanding throughout the continent. Gives more credence to the idea that the name they chose was because they were looking for a continental united states of America. Therefore, the name America was chosen as the United States were located in America.
I was right. Again. You were wrong. Again.
“Therefore, the name America was chosen as the United States were located in America.”
Thanks, Mrs. Obvious. Of course the name came from the continent. I have never argued any differently. I have never stated anything here that isn’t factually accurate. You definitely can’t say the same thing. You have never proven wrong anything that I have written here. Stop pretending that I am claiming that the name ‘America’ came from anywhere other than the continent. You are ***** that I have proven you wrong so many times, so you pretend that I don’t know more about these things than you do, and that I claim things that are false. You have NEVER proven me wrong. NEVER!!!
So what is the name of the continent again?
in English to say "America" is short for "United States of America" in informal daily use (the official one is "United States")
To say America in Spanish is to refer to South America and North America together.
No matter what language you speak.
Argentina is Argentina and America is America.
But, you are stupid.
You, stupid idiot.
The United States Of America
So how can one be so stupid that thinks America is for the country and not for the continent when the name was COINED for a continent! There is no historical fact one can find where the United States baptizes the country with a name that is not the continent's. Or where do you think America came from?
Thanks, Mrs. Obvious.
‘United States’ is the short form of the name. ‘United States of America’ is the official name. ‘America’ is an alternative name.
There are Spanish speakers who use ‘América’ to refer to the USA. There are Spanish speakers who use ‘Americano’ to refer to US citizens. Let’s not pretend otherwise.
so what is to say Africa in English and Asia or how do you say it in Spanish? Is it only America the one that has the problem with the English using it only for a country? Many other countries teach five continent model and America is just one.
You are born in Canada, you are Canadian,
You are Born in Mexico, you are Mexican.
Why does there have to be an issue when it comes to the name "America"?
They are born in America, and they would forever be Americans!
But, all of you prefer to act stupid.
Born in America means that he is American.
The United States Of America
maybe she is american.
wrong, if I was born in Costa Rica, I am a Costa Rican, but also an American from the continent of America. Just like a person born in Italy, is Italian, and also an European from the continent of Europe.
We all know that Argentinians are not Americans but Argentinians.
We all know that Mexicans are not Americans, they are Mexicans.
Americans are the people of America.
But, we also know that Mexicans and Argentinians are americans too. They are still Mexicans and Argentinians hahahahahaha
The United States Of America
I don't care about your facts.
Same facts that make America a confusion.
There are not two America.
Its name, United States Of America.
Their people. The American people!.
You are stupid.
are you now telling me if I should use "of" instead of "Of"?
You are still stupid.
United States Of America
your the troll you have posted more than me!!!!!!!!
Frequent posting and being a troll aren’t the same thing. Think!!!
The correct spelling is - The United States of America. and not - The United States Of America
Check out how wikipedia and other sites spell it.
Go ahead and check it out if you don't believe me.
At least know how to spell The United States of America correctly
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States
Dave doesn’t care about facts. I already provided links to various sites, including US government sites, that prove the obvious fact that the ‘of’ is not capitalized. He is obviously a poorly educated, ignorant troll.
your the troll you have posted more than me!!!!!!!!
It’s “you’re”, not “your”.
Mrs. Anonymous wrote: “If you read what happened, yes they took Texas thanks to the inhabitants there who chose to go with the U.S.. but they could not go down to Mexico and they retrieved.”
I am shocked, shocked I tells you, that you don’t know what you are talking about. The US didn’t just take Texas. How do you not know this? You are monumentally ignorant. How have you not learned by now to keep your mouth shut when you so obviously don’t know the relevant history? How can you possibly pretend to be informing anyone of anything when you obviously have no clue?
It’s called the Mexican Cession. Read a book.
Considering the seizures, including all of Texas, Mexico lost 54% of its pre-1836 territory in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Cession
The Mexican Cession of 1848 refers to the lands ceded or surrendered to the United States by Mexico at the end of the Mexican–American War.[1] The territory became the states of California, Nevada, Utah and Arizona.[1] It was agreed to in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which formally ended the war (1846–1848) between Mexico and the United States.[2] The treaty was signed on 2 February 1848.[2] The Cession added 500,000 square miles (1,300,000 km2) of territory to the southwestern United States. It also contributed to the United States emerging as a world power in the late the 19th century.[2]

We are not talking about Mexico and America.
Here we are supposed to talk about why Americans own their demonym as Americans.
They are America and American is their demonym.
States United in America.
Mexico is not united with America sorry, they are Mexico.
America is too american for you.
The United States Of America
Is Puerto Rico owned by Americans?,
Are they americans or Americans?, or perhaps Puerto Ricans?
They were already in America before they were attached to the now called States of America.
Oh look, this website asks what country I am typing from and it lists Puerto Rico as one of them.
Isn't Puerto Rico already taken by The States of America?
States Of America.
Puerto Rico!
take it easy Chris.
States of America!
Is Puerto Rico also united?
They can not unite. They are under the American philosophies.
That's why the country has a name as "America".
That's why its name is The United States Of America.
As of today, no one else could be united anymore with The USA and therefore any land would be classified as part of the United States Of America, the unification already happened a long time ago.
The United States Of America does not need any more unifications, they already did that.
That's why they have a name. It became a name and they will forever be a name.
That name is "United States Of America"
