USA is not America

Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!

America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

America

How should I use the term America then?

Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:

  • This is how we do it in America.
  • This is how we do it in the States.
  • America is my country and I love it.
  • The United States is my country and I love it.
  • America lost the Vietnam war.
  • U.S.A. lost the Vietnam war.
  • Here in America we love Mc Donald's.
  • Here in the U.S. we love Mc Donald's.

Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

The Government of the United States can not use "America" in its governmental organizations: U.S. Post oFfice, U.S. Army, U.S. Dollar, U.S. Embassy, U.S. Census, U.S. President, U.S. Congress, U.S. Senate, U.S. Navy, U.S.Mint, U.S.Passport, U.S. Immigration, U.S. Customs, U.S. Ports etc etc.

what does the USA one dollar bill say?

Let me remind you;

"United States Of America"

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

But it doesn't say "America"! There!!

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

America is one continent, a nation who uses the name of America, is because it is located in that continent.

fake Paulsays...

Do you even notice know bad is your usage of comas and other accentuation every time you write something?

If English is not your first language at least show a level of respect when trying to speak it.

How could you discuss a topic when your ignorance is shown within your context.

And you still talking bulls+it?

You, still stupid.

Learn English properly, then talk about America later.

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

No matter what this individual, who trolls in this website, says, it shows that he/she doesn't have a case to stand with. America was the name of the new continent coined by Europeans. The U.S. came about hundreds of year after the naming of the continent. The U.S. used the name of the continent, with the intention to create a nation with every state in the continent thus adding "of America" to signify a union of the American states, those in the continent of America. This new nation only took some of the north of the continent and not all of it. But the name stuck and then it needed to be legit. So, they divided America into two continents, and began teaching the two continent version in America. This way, perhaps, there would be no conflict with using the name "America" now that they have done away with the one continent in their strategic move. Not every nation accepts that version but they keep the original version, one America.

Paul already explained belowsays...

They came from other people who named the western hemisphere America.

The also founded a country with the name they used for the new world.

Fabián(Argentina)says...

Even in the English language there is NOTHING that is called only America, nor continents nor countries. There is a continent called South America, there is another called North America, and there is a country called the United States of America, which some English speakers for short when they refer to it say only "America."

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

but where do you think south America and North America came from?

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

I wish we could have the option to edit things, but I missed to add : the name of south America and North America even of Central America came from?

Mrs. Anonymoussays...

By the way, you are correct when specifying that it is in the English language that people are taught a two continent version and not the one continent version of America. The version of two continents does not negate that the one continent's name is America, for if one goes back to where south and north are from, one finds out that these are part of the one continent America.

Oh what do you know? The USA is temporarily shutting its borders to immigrants to fight the virus... oops... I mean.... invisible enemy.

Of course, if the Continental Congress and Washington hadn’t been so prejudiced against Catholics and brown people, there probably wouldn’t be any borders in this hemisphere would there?

Oh wait! That’s right! Countries like Cuba and Canada didn’t ever join the USA because they hated your freedom and liberty.

Right yanks?
