America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

okay guys I have a question.
For example, if people in Poland are called Polish, then what are people from the US called? American? But America is a continent. So, Mexicans are Americans too.
To make my question clear:
People from Poland: Polish, but also European
People from Turkey: Turkish, but also Asian
People from US: American, but also American????

U.S. citizens are American by both nationality and continental affiliation. Some people don’t like this, so they pretend that it isn’t true, and/or that it is somehow incorrect. They pretend that ‘America’ can be the name for South America, all of the Americas, Latin America, a professional soccer team in Mexico, a woman’s name, a community in the state of Indiana, and a number of other things, but somehow not a name for the USA. However, we all know that it is a very commonly used name for the USA. They never provide any proof that what they claim is true. This is because there isn’t any proof because what they claim is false. They will also often pretend that it is only Americans or native English speakers who use ‘America’ and ‘American’ to refer to the USA and its citizens. We all know that many people all over the world who speak many different languages use ‘America’ and ‘American’ to refer to the USA and its citizens.
The United States of America didn't use a name like other countries like Poland or Chile did. There is a history that can explain the reason why it was like this. Your interpretation seems logical. Yes, everyone living in the continent of America is an American from the continent. The United States has used "America" but it is erroneously to think that it is its name by origin or by meaning because the USA uses the name of the continent in its name so people get confused and spread the confusion. Just think of the name given to the nations in Europe who are part of the European Union. They are European, but they are not only the Europeans, other nations are in Europe and are Europeans, but not part of the European Union. So it is more ore less the case with the United States of America.
The United States is a conglomerate of States who united to form a nation in the continent of America. The European Union, is a conglomerate of nations who united to form a union in the continent of Europe. Not every country in Europe is part of the European Union just as not every state/or nation in the continent of America is part of the United States of America. For this reason, countries in America call the USA as Estados Unidos and its abbreviations are EEUU. It is not logical to call it America when America is the continent in which others live. But, it is logical to call the people in the USA, Americans, since they are in the American continent just as it is logical to call a Colombian, American too.
