America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:
Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

Pan American = americano
South American = demonym for what in English is the continent of South America
North American = demonym for what in English is the continent of North America
American = citizen of the USA
American = estadounidense
America = "The United States of America" informally abbreviated

Read the comment from Alfonso within the Top Likes: "That's the united statian propaganda! (Hollywood and news channels)"
:) very simple
You’re the one who is very simple. :-)
In your simplemindedness you choose to call it American propaganda. That’s fine. We can all live with that. But the dictionary entries are factually accurate, and that meaning of America existed before cinema, radio, and television. Try again.
And even if it were true that the meaning of America as the USA only existed because of American propaganda, it still exists. It doesn’t magically cease to exist just because you mistakenly think it only exists due to American propaganda. This is reality, not your fantasy realm.
Thanks for accepting it's United Statian propaganda. Indeed, the power of media is a reality.
We, your American, Asian and African neighbors can't do anything about that. Maybe China will hahaha.
Good one Anonymous. David, as you agree, you can give a thumbs up linking such comment. But do not vote 20 times please, that would not be fair.
Hahah! Yes please David 20 or 30 votes against a true statement from history gives you in.
“There is nothing in English that calls America...”
This is one of those times when you are clearly, undeniably, indisputably WRONG. How can you claim that nothing is called ‘America’ in English? It’s ridiculous enough to claim that the US isn’t called ‘America’ in English, but to claim that NOTHING is called ‘America’ in English is simply nonsense. What the F are you thinking? This website wouldn’t exist if the US weren’t commonly called ‘America’. Please think before posting. We get enough unadulterated BS from Mrs. Anonymous. We don’t need you to add to it. Thanks.

America /əˈmɛrɪkə/
n
1. short for the United States of America
2. Also called: the Americas the American continent, including North, South, and Central America
https://www.wordreference.com/definition/America
There is nothing in English that calls America, they are:
-South America
-North America
-The United States of America
But nothing called just America.
I will add that when it is convenient for the U.S. Central America is also in their vocabulary especially when it deals with illegal immigrants from that part of the continent.
And to let others understand that this Central America is not actually in the middle of the United States, the one they think is America, but it is actually the middle of the continent of America.
This one really hurts David x 28
I think that the indignation is calmed when knowing that they had to invent patches in their language, and some are interesting and knowing them is useful:
America = the Americas
American = Pan American
South America = continent
North America = continent
America = informal abbreviation for The United States of America
CORRECTED VERSION, SORRY
I think that the indignation is calmed when knowing that they had to invent patches in their language, and some are interesting and knowing them is useful:
América = the Americas
americano = Pan American
South America = continent
North America = continent
America = informal abbreviation for The United States of America
Pan-America, Panamericano, Panamericana, or in English Panamerican. Not Panamericas, Panamericasno, Panamericasna, Panamericasn. What does it mean? Prefix. Pan -, a prefix from the Greek πᾶν, pan , meaning "all", "of everything", or "involving all members" of a group. All of America = Pan America. And it doesn't mean the USA. The carretera Panamericana does not only go through the U.S.A. but throughout America the continent. Pan-Americana Pan-American doesn't relate to the USA only and as you can see it means Everything in America is American not the USA though.
Ooooopa new stuff here!!
David are you okay? Or are you avoiding our questions?
1- "America" the nickname of a nation
In 1776, the first nation-state of America (the Americas) to emerge from European colonies is named "The United States of America", a name that is not easy to use for its people -too long-, the name comes from the name used during the war and revolution of independence "The United Colonies", then "colonies" are changed to "states" and the name of the continent is added to give it strength against the mighty Great Britain.
More than a century later the "problem" of the name was still there, although there was an official abbreviation, "United States", its people began to abbreviate it in another way, using the last word, "America". But there is still no country called America, only one called The United States of America.
Only people who are closed minded would think that the United States invented the name of America for itself thereby having a different meaning from the one given. They think it didn't meant the continent in which the nation was born in. But even when some say it was to mean the continent in which it was located in, that later it somehow changed its meaning. Did it change by itself or was it on purpose?
I think that at the beginning, until the middle of the 20th century, they knew well that the word America was there in the name of the continent, that can be seen in old maps in English from before the 50s, where in their titles it says "American continent" or "America", not "The Americas" or "South America continent" or "North America continent". But the following generations grew up with those denominations, they are not to blame.
Yes they knew about one continent America so what happened?
