America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?

And as for the demonym, it seems to me more difficult to justify that they say Americans but in each language they decide to use it as they want, for us in Spanish and some other languages "americano" is exclusively for the continental, what belongs to America and for the nationality of someone from the United States we have the word estadounidense. And for the continental in English they are South American or North American, and encompassing both Pan American.

what linguists know (Real Academia Española) is that for a word to begin to be considered as an official denomination it absolutely depends on its USE, and I know that some young people from the community of English-speaking countries started using USAR for example "US America" (and not just "America").
