America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:
Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

If your native language had more influence, the words would mean what you want them to mean.
If your tía had balls, she’d be your tío.
Hahaha!!!
So United Statians invade your territory with an army and your language with their media. What a scoundrel!
White collar criminals hiding behind fancy agencies. The rest are innocent Washington followers.
Did you watch the Netflix film "The Trial Of The Chicago 7"? I had to stop watching it. The insolent calls for "Americans" and transcribes/translates it to "Americanos". It is a recent example of another starting decade of disrespect to their neighbors.
And then you have blatant guys like David saying that "Hispanic" people also use the word... obviously after the US repeats it a thousand times, then they can say it is "used".
Thieves!
Harsh, but very true dude!
This is great news. The use of ‘americano’ to mean ‘U.S. citizen’ is spreading. In Brazil it’s the most common term for a U.S. citizen. It’s common in some Spanish-speaking countries too. It’s so interesting to watch languages evolve. Fascinating.
Spain??
Mrs. Anonymous (probably): Brazil??
It is a barbarism to call a United Statian an "americano". Probably the US government is sponsoring the media business to do that, in a similar way they controlled their population against black brothers before.
No facts. Just probablies. You guys. Typical.
Haven't you read literature about the media manipulation in the US (e.g. in favor of racism)? That is history of your country David. Read a bit more. This is not a school. Do your homework.
US literature!
The people of the USA were labelled Americans first by the British when the first colonies where established and later by the rest of Europe, especially during WWII. I suggest you bring this up as an issue with the British, French, Germans, Italians and other European countries. Any educated person living on the American continent doesn't give a ***** what the people of the USA call themselves, there are much bigger issues about the USA we could criticize e.g. continuous republican support of trump by the party, women, recent and new immigrants and US African Americans (note the distinction :).
Saying that there are more important topics is an excuse to ignore facts which are simple to treat. It should all start with acknowledgement. The incumbent's condition requires acceptance first. The cure then comes alone.
America is not a word.
How did you write it? =D
Ask Mrs. Anonymous about that.
Smell like some spam over here... eau de toilette
Roda wrote: This is the paragraph were David got that quote from and one can see it in many different ways. "The name for the northern land mass, Parias, is derived from a passage in the Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci, in which, after several stops, the expedition arrives at a region that was "situated in the torrid zone directly under the parallel which describes the Tropic of Cancer. And this province is called by them [the inhabitants] Parias."[11][12] Parias was described by Waldseemüller's follower, Johannes Schöner as: "The island of Parias, which is not a part or portion of the foregoing [America] but a large, special part of the fourth part of the world", indicating uncertainty as to its situation.[13][14]"
