Indeed, U.S.A. is not America!
America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
How should I use the term America then?

As for the use of the word "American" it seems to me more questionable, because even the main dictionaries of the English language admit that this word continues to be its logical use for what belongs to the Americas (or America). The one I think they should use is "US American" for nationality, because it includes all the elements of your full name.
When they say "America" they are not just saying that word, they are compressing or abbreviating -as happens with any long name- the real name "The United States of America", all that sentence is the name of the country, not just a part of her.
"America" is an informal abbreviation, the OFFICIAL abbreviation is "United States".
