America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
How should I use the term America then?

I see that you have missed me David. They did not take Mexico city! After treaty Guadalupe Hidalgo Mexico stayed Mexican and the advancement to the rest of the continent stopped there. The manifest destiny only made it to the west. The though of spreading throughout the entire continent of America was not realized and so they had to somehow explain why they were going to take the name of America somehow. My opinion has been that the U.S. then had the idea of separating America into two continents so that the name America was freed.

By that I meant that Mexico City stayed Mexican even though the United States had held it for a while. But in the end it returned to Mexico. So they did not take it as they did with Texas.
