America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:
Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

Let the world know that USA should not be called America! America is one whole continent.

Also British America was not only the Thirteen Colonies of the now US, but also the territories in now Canada, some in the Caribbean and South America.
Andy for president!
Our American leader
Its good you are two are friends, but the comment is off topic.
I am aware of these facts, thank you. But your comments are not relevant to my comments.
You are not aware of any fact, you are indeed an ignorant.
By the way, today is 15 august 2021, which means 502 years since the foundation of the first European permanent settlement in mainland America, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Panama. It was destroyed by you guess it, a British by the name of Henry Morgan.
People do what people do
No, that is not what people normally do. He was a pirate with antagonistic behaviour ans nature.
The eyes have it (United States) your ignorance is not a surprise.
You don’t know me to know if I am ignorant or not.
Argentina's first name was, according to its declaration of independence, "United Provinces IN South America", which I think is what the United States should have done with its name to avoid all these confusion: "The United States IN America "or" in North America".
Mexico also was: América Mexicana, and America Septentrional.
Central America except Panama also was: Provincias Unidas del Centro de América o Estados Federados del Centro de América, República Federal de Centroamérica.
Vps says two things here:
1) The Pan Americanist, "one" America argument is not held by all South Americans
2) And as such, Argentina clearly defined South America as, well, South America
In this context, the list here are apparent Iberian centric constructs. No one contests the names of these countries. Yet they are listed to suggest their use of the word "America" supersedes the U.S. use of the word. Please reread my initial comments. I have no problem with any peoples' traditions. What I is reject is the arrogant Pan-Amercanist claim (in a hegemonic sense) of how citizens of the U.S. are to define their nation.
Clarifying comment just above: I.e. Apparently listed for Iberian centric reasons: "Mexico also was: América Mexicana, and America Septentrional. Central America except Panama also was: Provincias Unidas del Centro de América o Estados Federados del Centro de América, República Federal de Centroamérica."
I aplogize, the map, was in 1507, and the "island" shown is Floria, but the point remains the same.
The use of the name "America" for the present United States, simply comes from the term "Brtish America", the title for the Thirteen Colonies, given by Great Britain. Its an Anglo-centric term. But, the present use of "America" argued for on this website, taken from the 1505 map, which only details present day South America, and, apparently, the "island of California," is, nessisarly, a
Iberian-centric construct. So, to argue there is only one American continent today, is well, very "weak tea".
You are aware that Spanish America was a thing first right? I think you fail history if you don't know when the English started arriving.
Yes, I know the Spanish colonies came first. That's kind of my point. I often hear about South Americans being offended by the people of the United States calling themselves Americans, and that that to do so is ethno-centric (or Anglo-centric). In that the 1507 Waldseemüller map was unable to detail the rest of the Americas (that is, large swaths of land that would later make up much British America), the claim of South America to call itself exclusively by the name "America" (due to the map 1507 map) is a VERY ethno-centric (or Iberian [Spanish/Portuguese]-centric) point of view!
South Americans don't claim to call ourselves America, where did you get that from?
They are right beacause it is historically from them, nothing to do with your centric-wordiness. That is why Greece, succesfully, reclaimed the name Macedonia. And not only South Americans but also Central Americans and Mexicans. Also the purpose of that map was to despict America being separated by Asia for the first time.
ONLY South America and a bit of Florida are shown on the map. These areas basically were to make up Spanish or Portuguese colonies. Again, South Americans on this website, who insist of being called “Americans” are as guilty of being ethno-centric, as Anglos are (the British, and later USA). So much for P.C shaming! I am not really moved by the arguments of this website. The United States has every right to call itself America (on the North American continent, which was not basically not detailed on the 1507 Waldseemüller map).

Hmmmmm...
USA is NOT America(Canada) we need to resolve our differeces as I "hope" our goal is basically the same, right?
I would like to ask you politely … how do we start resolving our differences?
I think, abstaining from unnecessary comments.
Okay, I can try. I’m hoping change.org will reach 1,000 signed votes for Google Maps to recognize America also as a Continent!
A lot of people here didn’t want the Americans to win the most Olympic medals, but they won both the most medals and the most golds. I congratulate America for its great performance. I congratulate all the participants for a successful Olympics during these difficult times. Go world!!
Oh my goodness. I didn’t know there is a 2nd Craig Lungren in Canada!
I would like to know what province are you from?
"Both of your" are the same person don't you?
“"Both of you" are the same person, don't you?”
Lol, I am NOT the same person that has written what Craig Lungren said. I would never write anything like that.
I NEVER will call the United States “America” and its residents “Americans”, because I do know that is wrong. They are NOT the only Americans of the New World!
By the way, I believe that the person called “Andy”, “Andrea” and “Andy or Andrea” is realistically the same individual! :D
You are obnoxious, and stubborn first is no the "americans" and second it is not "America" why do you come to the site.
And yes people wanted Americans such as Yulimar Rojas to win medals.
YES! we made it! thank you :D
Hello jsmith, are you a United Statian too? you write like Miss Morgan.
