America is the name of a whole continent. United States of America means that the United States belongs to America and NOT that America belongs to the United States. So, next time you want to refer to The United States of America, you can do it as U.S. or the States or whatever you want but not as only America. Gotcha?
Here we will show you some wrong and correct uses of the term America:
Please, note that this page in not about demonyms (gentilics) but about the way to call a country.

From the same link yoo boobo: "Article 8th:
The Navigation of the river Mississippi, from its source to the Ocean, shall forever remain free and open to the Subjects of Great Britain and the Citizens of the United States."...........Comparing countries and naming both one Great Britain and the other United States. For me, this is clear as water.
From the link provided by Bo Boobo: "Article 9th:
In case it should so happen that any Place or Territory belonging to great Britain or to the United States should have been conquered by the Arms of either from the other before the Arrival of the said Provisional Articles in America, it is agreed that the same shall be restored without Difficulty and without requiring any Compensation." ..... It is clear that here they meant the continent in which both the territories of Britain and the United States are in.
Mrs Anonymous,
You are free to think what you want about the British Empire, but as you suggest, the U.K .defined and redefined the Americas, as it saw fit, as it increased its power in North America. The thirteen colonies received the name “America” from the U.K. After Great Britain was defeated in the America Revolution, in the Treaty of Paris (1783), it was forced to formally acknowledge the independent of the thirteen colonies as “the United States of America”. U.S. legitimacy for the use of “America” comes from the America Revolution and, after its defeat, the formal acknowledgement from Great Britain, that we are Americans. That is reality, and no squabbling over names on maps will change that. Sorry there was no United Nations back then to acknowledge the legitimacy of new states.

And of course, if you reject the legitimacy in my argument, you are rejecting the legitimacy of your own revolutions, and your own respective peace treaties with Imperial Spain. You are fee to call yourselves whatever you want, and any in sense that you like too. But, I am quite legitimate in calling myself an American, in the sense that I am a citizen of the United States of America, and that won’t change.
oh, this was from you boo-boo, not yoo boobo. lol!
I can definitely make fun of your last sentence if I have to.
After all, it’s just as you said “You are free to call yourself whatever you want, and in any sense that you like to.”! :D
sounds like imperialism on the new world to me.
Thanks Yo Boobo for the link you provided us with. It helps to understand that the British knew that there was a continent called America and that the United States was the new country in America ei United States of This is from the Article 3rd:... " And also that the Inhabitants of the United States shall have Liberty to take Fish of every Kind on such Part of the Coast of Newfoundland as British Fishermen shall use, (but not to dry or cure the same on that Island) And also on the Coasts, Bays & Creeks of all other of his Brittanic Majesty's Dominions in America; and that the American Fishermen shall have Liberty to dry and cure Fish in any of the unsettled Bays, Harbors, and Creeks of Nova Scotia, Magdalen Islands, and Labrador, so long as the same shall remain unsettled," I underscored and italized words.
So the English in the colonies took the name of the continent and didn't care if there were others living in it?
I think this website has reached its 100th page!!
America has always been America - in Spanish, English, Portuguese and French, the 3 main American languages. There are 3 countries in Northern America: Canada, US and Mexico.
You meant the four main American languages, but yes, you are right. America only has one definition. The rest is United Statian invention and washing... writing and repeating it wrongly everywhere.
what is least thought about on this website is language, because no one would question whether we are all being imperialists by calling "Egypt" -Egipto- a country that was never called that (it is called "Misr" and formerly "Kemet"), perhaps we should start being flexible about this with language in mind.
From Latin Aegyptus, from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos), from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ (literally “The temple of the ka of Ptah”)
You are talking misinformation.
Why every time do people need to remember how stupid and wrong you are, you are annoying, stubborn and obnoxious. GO AWAY ALREADY!!!
David, every information you get is either false or you are distorting what they say. Please go away!!!
David names:

Facts are Facts
eyes have it
Just go away already!!!
David you are still here? I am glad others are here telling you the same thing...that America is one continent and the my opinion has been that USA took the name and tried to get away by dividing the continent into two so that it can use the name freely!
Even with America being 2 continents (where as North America and South America are their own continents) … still does NOT prove that the name America and demonym American are available for the country of USA to use those 2 words freely for their own nationality.
So this is simple, America and American are NEVER available to be used freely for any single country’s nationality … no matter how many American Continents there are!
America is forever the name of the New World and American forever means from America (NOT United States)!
I see it differently, when they divided the continent, they began calling it the AMERICAS which is different than just America. Two continents are supposed to the THE AMERICAS and the USA is supposed to be America for the English speaking world. I don't know where you studied your history, I was taught that there is only one continent America not two. Being from Central America it is hard to understand those who think they can play with our lands and one day it is part of North America and another day is part of South America. Well, that is those who think they can power play us small countries, but we have always been one in Central America which is the CENTER or America the continent. When people say two continents, I say what about Central America? Is it in the center of USA? Of course not and it is not part of North America either or these countries would be included in the old NAFTA deals etc. Think about that.
What does NAFTA stand for?
NAFTA: North American Free Trade Agreement if I am not mistaken
Hmm, well … You can think differently all you like, but I absolutely don’t care that USA began calling it the Americas ever since they have divided the continent! Two continents can be called THE AMERICAS but the USA is still NOT supposed to be (called) America for the English speaking world. That’s okay if you were taught that there is only one continent of America (Not two). I agree that Central America is the CENTER of America the continent. Whenever I say North America though, I am always including Central America!
Is it in the center of USA? Of course NOT … but I do see it as 1 of 3 sub-divisions being a part of North America. If NAFTA stood for “Northern American Free Trade Agreement” instead of “North American Free Trade Agreement” … then it makes sense that Central American countries wouldn’t be included in the old NAFTA deals etc. But in this case, they would have. Otherwise, they meant to add 'ern' at the end of 'North' to be more specific!
…
…
By The Way, if …
1)'Glad' is another word for 'Happy' …
2)'Image' and 'Photo' are 2 other words for 'Picture' …
3)'Grand Dad' and 'Grand Father' are 2 other ways of saying 'Grandpa' …
(Simply 2 or more words that are all really meaning the same thing)
… then 'THE AMERICAS' and 'PAN AMERICA' ARE 2 other ways of saying 'AMERICA'. They are NO DIFFERENT than just America (by itself)!!!
Overall, no matter what language you speak (whether it be just 1 or more) … The Americas (or Pan America) (1)NEVER can exist without their singular name America and (2)NEVER can lose their real/logical definition in all languages (including English) ANYWAY! Think about that!!! :D
